I have a confession to make: this is my third attempt at writing a blog post. It’s not writer’s block I’ve suffered from – it’s writer’s anxiety. I struggled to hit publish because I like having an editor who can cast an independent eye over my work. But this is different so…
Welcome to Amy Writes, my new place online. I’ve dreamed of having a blog but for a long time couldn’t decide what to write about. I mulled over different ideas for about a year. To solve this dilemna, I’ve decided to write about anything that captures my interest.
The plethora of blogs in the cloud means it rains constantly and my voice will be one of many. Will I get drowned out? Will anyone notice? Does it even matter? Here is what I think – many voices make a conversation. I just need to join in, splash around, and see what happens.
I’ve always loved reading but it’s often hard to find the time to escape into a good book. To get around this I’ve been reading long-form magazine articles, a lot of creative non-fiction, from the New Yorker to personal essays and Karl Ove’s Knausgard’s books – he makes the ordinary extraordinary, and I was entranced when I heard him speak at this year’s Auckland Writer’s Festival.
As for writing, at the moment I’m working on a personal essay that needs to be finished by the end of this month for editing – I’ll get a few trusted friends to review it, then I’ll submit it to the Landfall essay competition. It’s worth a try, and a handy deadline for a writer who needs a motivation to complete a self-assigned task!
